China's PBS has made great strides towards industrialization

"although our equipment is still in the stage of installation and commissioning, our products have been fully booked." Dr. jijunhui, chief engineer of the National Engineering Research Center for engineering plastics of the Institute of physical and chemical technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told proudly recently. The product mentioned by Dr. Ji is PBS (polybutylene succinate) resin with independent intellectual property rights of the center

pbs is a new type of fully degradable bioplastics. Compared with other bioplastics such as PCL, PHB and PHA, its heat resistance has been greatly improved. The heat deformation temperature is close to 100 ℃, and the modified temperature can exceed 100 ℃, which can fully meet the heat resistance requirements of daily necessities. Therefore, among all biodegradable plastic products, its market prospect is the most promising in the industry. According to conservative estimates, there is currently a demand of 500000 tons/year in the Chinese market alone, which can be described as unlimited business opportunities

at present, the only countries in the world that can industrialize and market PBS are the United States and Japan. Showa polymer company of Japan and Eastman company of the United States have production plants with a scale of 5000 tons/year and 15000 tons/year respectively. China's PBS industrialization process is also actively advancing. In the "Eleventh Five Year Plan" of the Ministry of science and technology, the PBS industrialization project is impressively listed, which also shows the government's attention to degradable plastics and recognition of PBS resin. Ji Junhui told that China's PBS industrialization was about to be realized. At present, the National Engineering Research Center for engineering plastics of the Institute of physics and chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has built a 300 ton/year pilot plant, and the 30000 ton/year PBS plant that the center cooperates with Yangzhou grace New Materials Co., Ltd. and the 20000 ton/year PBS plant that it cooperates with an enterprise in Hangzhou are under intense construction and are expected to be put into operation next year. At that time, China will have 5 million tons/year PBS production capacity, taking ABS plastic as an example, which can compete with foreign enterprises for high charging speed and accuracy, taking into account the ecological conditions

"the market prospect of PBS is also very good." Dr. Ji thinks. At present, about 50million tons of plastic waste are produced in the world every year, of which about 10% are difficult to recycle or non recyclable waste. Among these wastes, disposable plastic products are the main ones. PBS has the absolute advantage of full degradation in this market and will undoubtedly have the upper hand in the future competition. It is roughly estimated that PBS has a potential demand of nearly 5million tons/year. Taking into account the capacity to be expanded in Japan and the United States (Japan will expand to 20000 tons/year, and the country of manufacturer in the United States is unknown) and China's production capacity, we can see that there is still a huge gap between supply and demand in the global PBS market

"in fact, we have never worried about product sales." Dr. Ji said so. At the beginning of the preparation for the construction of Yangzhou plant, Shanghai Shenhua Group had signed a 10000 ton/year purchase contract, and the group has considerable strength in the field of disposable tableware in Shanghai. After 60% starch modification, the heat-resistant temperature of PBS can reach 112 ℃, and its physical and chemical properties can fully meet the requirements of disposable tableware, and the production cost is fully acceptable to enterprises. Now, Shenhua Group has used PBS materials in the production of disposable hotel supplies. If China's PBS 10000 ton devices are put into operation next year, their application scale and varieties will be further expanded

compared with foreign products, PBS in China has strong competitive advantages in performance and price. At present, the price of domestic PBS is 28000 yuan/ton, while the price of Showa products in Japan is 50000 ~ 60000 yuan/ton, and that of American products is 45000 ~ 50000 yuan/ton. In terms of performance, Japan uses isocyanate as chain extender to synthesize PBS. Because isocyanate has certain biological toxicity, its promotion clearly indicates that it is not recommended for food and medical packaging, while China uses straight chain polymerization to avoid this problem. However, it can be seen that the most potential market for PBS application is the disposable packaging field, and food packaging is the top priority in this field. It can be predicted that in the future competition, China's PBS may pull down the international market price, and more products will adopt PBS at that time, which will bring great potential to PBS market development

the National Engineering Research Center for engineering plastics of the Institute of physics and chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has now obtained three patents for PBS resin, including core production devices and main production processes, and three PBS products developed have also obtained patents. At present, while cooperating with enterprises to build 30000 T/A and 20000 t/a PBS industrialization projects, the center is also implementing the industrialization project of its raw material bio succinic acid in Shenyang, and studying its modification process. On the one hand, it makes the sources of PBS materials more extensive, on the other hand, it expands the use of materials, in order to make this green environmental protection material develop healthily and continuously
